Bee – Bumble Bee – Bombus hortorum

The common name of Bombus hortorum is the “garden bumble bee” and its full taxonomy is:-

  • Class – Insecta
  • Order – Hymenoptera
  • Family – Apidae
  • Genus – Bombus
  • Species – hortorum

One of the most common bumble bees.  It is large, with long hair and black pollen baskets.  It’s notable features include a long and broad face, long proboscis, yellow collar, slightly lighter yellow hoop at the top of the abdomen and white tip of the abdomen.  It often nests in the ground or in dense vegetation.
